Elizabeth Matthews, a native of Salt Lake City, Utah, graduated from Brigham Young University with a BFA in painting and drawing and a minor in English and then earned an M.Ed. in teaching and learning from Utah State University. She has exhibited in numerous shows in a variety of venues in Utah, where she has been recognized for her excellent work. She currently maintains a studio at the Baldwin Radio Factory in East Millcreek.
Matthews uses painting and drawing to address the culture of silence surrounding domestic violence both in the intimacy of family life and the extended society. Her narrative compositions include flatness, depth illusion, and craftsmanship, with colors and brushwork that reference abstract impressionism and the grand artistic tradition.
When she needs a break from this serious endeavor Matthews goes outside in the dramatic Utah landscape for plein air painting and drawing and also enjoys the challenge of using her skills to retell ancient scripture stories.
